The relentless fragmentation of the Eastern forests
through agriculture, logging, mining, railroads, and
hunting for sport and food were all responsible for
the demise of the passenger pigeon. The story of this
species' extinction embodies all that we rebel against:
disrespect for and wanton destruction of the state's
natural wealth, and the mentality of exploitation.
