State Forests

Ohio has 21 state forests, most of them scattered around the unglaciated southeastern part of the state, comprising over 200,000 acres in 21 counties. State Forests Campaign involves monitoring timber sales and other actions that negatively impact the quality of our public lands as well as working to achieve an end to commercial logging.

BFC also works to protect Ohio's state parks, which are now being threatened by fracking and commercial logging. Ohio has 75 state parks in 60 counties with over 174,000 acres of land and water. In June of 2011, the Ohio General Assembly opened state parks to oil and gas drilling (fracking) for the first time in their history. At the same time, the General Assembly passed a provision in the budget bill, HB 153, that opened state parks to commercial logging (including clearcuts) for the first time ever.

End Subsidies for Logging State Forests

Economic analysis reveals state forest timber sales unfairly compete with private sector and are a “loss leader” for taxpayers.

The Shawnee State Forest Economic Study, released today by the Buckeye Forest Council, the Ohio Environmental Council the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter, and Voices for the Forest details how the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Forestry (DOF) management of our state forests is a loss leader for Ohio taxpayers. The 192-page report analyzes DOF practices such as producing goods and services, like timber, that could be provided by the private sector, verses the economic benefits of managing state forests for intact forest ecosystems services, which would require comparatively little management.

Much of the Buckeye Forest Council's work has focused on protecting Ohio's 21 state forests.

Help us advocate for protection and restoration of state forests, which provide Ohioans with opportunities for recreation and a better quality of life.

Keep ATVs Out of Burr Oak State Park!

Attend the Public Forum THIS THURSDAY

Don’t let Burr Oak become the first state park opened to ATVs.

Public Forum this Thursday, August 16, 5-7pm

Burr Oak Lodge

10220 Burr Oak Lodge Road

Glouster, OH 45732

This Thursday, ODNR will seek input from the public on how to generate revenue from recreation in Burr Oak State Park.  Unfortunately, ODNR seems intent on creating 25 miles of ATV trails.  Some of the proposed ATV trail will cross and run right beside Ohio’s famous Buckeye Trail and other non-motorized hiking trails.

If you hike Burr Oak, have done so in the past, or would like to in the future, tell ODNR to keep ATVs out.  Motorized recreation is not compatible with hiking and other forms of non-intensive recreation.

Visit the Buckeye Trail Association for more information, figures, and statistics relating to ATVs at Burr Oak:

Sign the petition to Protect Burr Oak here:

“ODNR does not have

■a project plan to share, including a map of the proposal

■a period of public comment planned

■a land management plan for Burr Oak State Park

■a published environmental or recreational impact study

And yet, up to 25 miles of the ATV trail have been flagged and ODNR is moving forward as if the project has full approval.”

Join BFC, BTA, and fellow concerned citizens this Thursday at Burr Oak Lodge.  Hope to see you there!
