Fracking

Hydraulic fracturing is the propagation of fractures in a rock layer caused by the presence of a pressurized fluid. Hydraulic fractures may form naturally, as in the case of veins or dikes, or may be man-made in order to release petroleum, natural gas, coal seam gas, or other substances for extraction, where the technique is often called "fracking."

Ohio Community Groups Join Growing Number Calling “Fracking Peace Deal” Bogus

Columbus, Ohio- A growing movement of grassroots community groups in Ohio released a statement today, which accompanied a letter sent directly to the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD), calling the “peace” reached by the Oil and Gas industry and environmental groups a complete fabrication.

The letter, sent by hundreds of citizens and community groups, stated, “We are in fact quite insulted that you (CSSD), presume to speak for Ohio citizens and Ohio environmental organizations. To date we have not found even one organization in our state that had any knowledge of this agreement, even though you have been working on it for the past two years.  If indeed you have been working or communicating with environmental organizations in Ohio, please provide us with the name(s) of these organizations.”

BFC - Sister City Press Conferences Held Today. To: USEPA, Suspend Ohio Department of Natural Resources Oil and Gas Injection Well Program. Citizens have lost faith in agencies ability to protect our health.

March 18, 2013 (Columbus, Youngstown, Athens, Stark Counties)- Today, Ohio citizens and citizens’ groups and state and national organizations held sister city press conferences to request that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), perform a full audit and investigation of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Underground Injection Control (UIC) program. Our request stems, in part, from the recent state and federal investigations launched into the illegal dumping of liquid oil and gas waste into a storm drain emptying into an unnamed tributary of the Mahoning River in Youngstown, Ohio by Mr. Ben Lupo, his employees, and associates.

BFC calls for Fracking Moratorium
Monday, 01 October 2012

Buckeye Forest Council & 50 Environmental, Health & Safety Groups call for Shale Drilling Moratorium

COLUMBUS, OH – A consortium of dozens of environmental and health and safety groups, representing tens of thousands of members throughout Ohio, today presented a letter to each member of the Ohio General Assembly asking that body to immediately issue a moratorium ordering the Ohio Department of Natural resources (ODNR) to withhold approval of well permits involving high volume, horizontal hydraulic fracturing, exploration, or extraction until such time as these drilling practices are demonstrated to be safe for the environment and human health and are properly and effectively regulated.

The recent New York Times investigative report on hydraulic fracturing was only the latest expose detailing the harms to human health and water quality in Marcellus shale- rich Pennsylvania. The Times series described incidents such as flowback waste water from Marcellus shale natural gas wells in Pennsylvania that contaminated sewage treatment plants and sources of drinking water with radioactive elements; and pollution of the Monongahela River from drilling in late 2008 that was so serious that residents of Pittsburgh were advised not to drink their tap water.

While hydraulic fracturing has been used to develop oil and gas for years in Ohio’s shallow wells, the volume of water and of chemicals that must be used to extract oil and gas from the Marcellus and Utica shale formations, is unprecedented, and the horizontal wells extending thousands of feet in several directions compound the risks.

"Ohio is clearly not ready to deal with the relatively new high volume hydraulic fracturing techniques that must be used in exploiting tight shale formations in the state,” explained Cheryl Johncox, Executive Director of Buckeye Forest Council. "We have only to look to our neighbor to the east, Pennsylvania, to see what can happen when this new technology is used in an environment without adequate government regulation.”
