Once 95% forested, Ohio is now only 30% forest, most of that young, highly fragmented, and riddled with oil, gas, and electric transmission lines, invasive species, and logging destruction. Our publicly owned forest comprises only 4% of Ohio’s land area; even this is subject to destructive corporate access and extraction. Ohio ranks 47th in the nation in public land available per-capita, but 7th in the nation for population.

The Buckeye Forest Council is a membership-based, grassroots organization dedicated to protecting Ohio’s native forests and their inhabitants through education, advocacy and organizing. The only statewide organization working full-time to protect Ohio’s forests, we strive to protect and preserve Ohio’s public forests from exploitation by logging, biomass extraction, mining, oil & gas drilling, and other harmful activities. With the threat of large-scale biomass-to-electricity projects and the more recent rush of deep-shale drilling and high-pressure horizontal hydraulic fracturing (HVHF or fracking) in Ohio, we have increasingly addressed impacts of energy production on both human and environmental health, advocating against these false climate solutions that negatively impact both.

Your membership will help us protect our natural legacy through public education, grassroots campaigns, litigation, policy advocacy, legislative education and lobbying.

BFC is spearheading Ohio efforts to educate the public, fight woody biomass proposals, challenge destructive state and federal forest policies, and help local communities protect themselves from the fracking onslaught. At stake are essential carbon sequestration, clean water, biological diversity, forest integrity, and community wellbeing.

BFC's role in these critically important public and environmental health issues derives from its ability to: 1) play a central role in a state heavily targeted by corporate energy producers and with a particularly egregious regulatory system, 2) support cutting edge strategy work with both grassroots and national partners, and 3) mobilize citizens in a populous and environmentally critical state to support national efforts for policy reform.
