Buckeye Forest Council as part of the Anti-Biomass Incineration – Forest Protection Campaign delivered a letter to Congress signed by public health, social justice, and environmental organizations opposing any legislation that further subsidizes tree and trash burning dirty incinerators. WE NEED YOUR HELP!Add your voice to the campaign and send a letter to our U.S. Senators TODAY! Industry groups are pushing hard to get large-scale tree and garbage incineration into a mix as “renewable biomass” energy.  Think that sounds too bad to be true?  Ohio’s renewable energy standards already count trees as “renewable biomass.”  Several Ohio utilities are seeking permits under these regulations to cut and burn millions of tree's for energy.  Tell your U.S. Senators to resist industry pressure and keep garbage and trees out of any proposed federal definition of renewable biomass.

National Biomass Energy Debate Coming to Ohio.

Recent news reports covering the downside of biomass energy proposals have generated articles in the Washington Post, Boston Globe, Biomass Magazine and Environment and Energy Daily. This debate on biomass energy generation is now coming home, making Ohio the ground zero of the argument.

Two reports published in recent weeks have established that burning woody biomass will cause greenhouse gas (GHG) levels to spike over the next several decades. The reports also outline the impossible task of meeting fuel demand for biomass energy generation without cutting down our forests. An Environmental Working Group Report released on Wednesday titled "Clear Cut Disaster Carbon loophole threatens U.S. Forests" reveals why Ohio is front and center in this debate:

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Forestry manages 20 state forests covering more than 185,000 acres in 21counties, mostly in the Ohio’s un-glaciated south eastern region. The State Forests of Ohio are organized into 2 districts (north and south) with 11administrative field offices located throughout the state.

Functional activities within the Division are divided into four major program areas: land management, fire, law/recreation, infrastructure/facilities.  At present, the ODOF workforce exceeds 70 individuals involved in state forest management.
